Why Learn Spanish

A personal note from Sr. Riegg:

Dear Students and Parents,

If you find it difficult to learn a foreign language, remember John 6: 
​
​"Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” 

This was right after Jesus had multiplied the 5 loaves and 2 small fishes for the 5000+ people -- and there was still a lot left over (twelve baskets full) after everyone got fed! 


In Matthew 6:31-33, Jesus says, “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

Seeking God's kingdom first is to get to know Him personally and intimately as His disciples, and to make Him known to others through our daily activities, such as learning Spanish. The primary reason for doing everything in life, and in this case for learning Spanish, is to know Jesus and make Him known. In other words, "Man's chief end is to glorify God,1 and to enjoy him forever." 

​The reason we learn Spanish is to know and share Christ better. 

If we are humble, the difficulties we face in life, such as learning Spanish, will cause us to go to our knees, where we get to know God better, and seek His help, direction, correction, joy and more.

When we know God better, we, in turn, become better people, not just in the subject area we are learning, but in terms of personal integrity, honor, compassion, etc. This goodness that God puts in us then spills over into other people’s lives, and, if they are humble, they get to know Jesus better, too.


But, we are not to seek God (and learn Spanish) in order to get more worldly "food", such as clothing, a bigger house, or more fame and power. Instead, we are to seek God (and learn Spanish) in order to get the "food" which never perishes - that is, Jesus Himself - to walk closely with Him and get to know intimately the Maker of the entire universe and the One who rescued us from every last one of our sins. Wow! 


What a friend and Lord to have!

May God bless and help us as we continue seeking and sharing Him more through our learning of Spanish.


​Oh, yea, and a side-benefit of having our primary objective as getting to know God better is that He will, incidentally, provide for all of our earthly needs. He'll give us the fish, the bread, and even the understanding of a foreign language, as we seek Him. We have no wants when we are in Him.

Estimados Estudiantes y Padres de Familia,

Si le resulta difícil aprender un idioma extranjero, recuérdese de Juan 6:
​
"Respondió Jesús y les dijo:  De cierto, de cierto os digo, que me buscáis, no porque habéis visto las señales, sino porque comisteis el pan y os saciasteis.  Trabajad no por la comida que perece, sino por la comida que a vida eterna permanece, la cual el Hijo del hombre os dará:  porque a éste señaló el Padre, que es Dios.” 

Esto fue justo después de que Jesús había multiplicado los cinco panes y los dos pececillos para alimentar cinco mil varones, y hubo aun muchos pedazos sobrantes (doce cestas), después de que cada uno fue alimentado.

En Mateo 6:31-33 Jesús dice: “ No os preocupéis pues, diciendo:  ¿Qué comeremos, o qué beberemos, o con qué nos cubriremos? Porque los Gentiles buscan todas estas cosas:  que vuestro Padre celestial sabe que de todas estas cosas tenéis necesidad.  Mas buscad primeramente el reino de Dios y su justicia, y todas estas cosas os serán añadidas”

El buscar primeramente el reino de Dios es conocerlo personalmente e íntimamente como sus discípulos, y darlo a conocer a otros a través de nuestras actividades diarias, tal como el aprender español. El principal objetivo de hacer cualquier cosa en la vida, y en este caso aprender español, es conocer a Cristo y compartirlo con otros. En otras palabras, "El fin principal y más noble del hombre es el de glorificar a Dios y gozar de él para siempre."
​La razón de que aprendamos español es conocer y compartir a Dios mejor.

​Si somos humildes, las dificultades que enfrentamos en la vida, tales como aprender español,  causará ir a nuestras rodillas, donde llegaremos a conocer a Dios mejor, y buscar su ayuda, dirección, corrección, gozo y mucho más.
Cuando conocemos a Dios mejor, nosotros a su vez, venimos a ser mejores personas, no solo en el área que estamos aprendiendo, sino en términos de integridad personal, honor, compasión, etc.   Esta bondad que Dios pone en nosotros, se esparce a las vidas de otras personas, y si ellos son humildes, llegan a conocer mejor a Jesús también.

Sin embargo, nosotros no buscamos a Dios ( y aprendemos Español)  a fin de obtener más “comida terrenal”, como ropa, una casa más grande, o más fama y poder.  En lugar de eso, buscamos a Dios ( y aprendemos Español ) a fin de obtener la “comida que nunca perece”, esto es,  a Jesús mismo; caminar estrechamente con Él y llegar a conocer íntimamente al Creador de todo el universo y a Aquél  que nos rescató de hasta el último de nuestros pecados.

Wow! Que amigo y Señor tenemos !

Que Dios nos bendiga y nos ayude a continuar buscando y compartiéndolo más, a través de nuestro aprendizaje del español.

Oh, sí !  Y un beneficio adicional de nuestro primer objetivo de conocer mejor a Dios,  es que Él además proveerá para todas nuestras necesidades terrenales. Él nos dará el pescado, el pan, e incluso la comprensión de un idioma extranjero, en la medida en que lo busquemos. No necesitamos nada  cuando estamos en Él.
